About Shana Southwind, MSW, RSW

I'm Anishinaabe from Treaty 3 Territory, where I was born and raised on reserve. My lived experiences, alongside my professional training, have shaped the therapist I am today. I was drawn to this work because I wanted to support people in processing experiences that I, my family, and many people in our communities have lived through. I believe in the strength and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, and I feel honoured to walk alongside clients as they reconnect with those strengths on their own healing journeys.

I'm a Registered Social Worker and psychotherapist. I completed my Master of Social Work at the University of Toronto, specializing in Indigenous Trauma and Resiliency. I currently provide counselling services within First Nations communities, and throughout my career I have also worked in Indigenous child welfare, Indigenous policy, and community mental health. These experiences have deepened my understanding of how trauma, relationships, culture, community, and systemic factors can influence well-being, while reinforcing that healing is deeply personal and looks different for everyone.

My approach to therapy is client-centred, strengths-based, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive. I strive to create a respectful, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where you can show up exactly as you are and explore your experiences at a pace that feels right for you. Depending on your goals, I may incorporate psychoeducation, practical coping strategies, mindfulness, and mind-body awareness into our work together.

I believe you are the expert in your own life. My role isn't to tell you what to do, but to walk alongside you with curiosity, compassion, and support as you navigate challenges, build on your strengths, and move toward the life you want to create.

Outside of therapy, you'll often find me in the gym, travelling, exploring the outdoors, or spending time with my dog, Cedar. These parts of my life help keep me grounded and remind me of the importance of balance, connection, and caring for ourselves in ways that feel meaningful.
